Shirts and Football Kits
It’s a given that the ardent supporter will buy
their team’s football tops – many purchasing new football kits for every new season. Some fans go a few steps
further, becoming completely absorbed with the sport. Many collectors start with one team, collecting all of the
merchandise; the home kits, the away kits – every item on the market. Some collectors will branch out,
collecting the football tops of numerous teams, whilst others stick to their own team, tracing memorabilia back
through the beautiful game and picking up rarer and more valuable items. It can take a lot of effort to track
down those elusive, early strips but they do make a great investment. Football only grows in popularity
through the ages in a manner in which no other sport can come close. There are a lot of other fans out there
too vying to get their hands on those rare, hard to pin down pieces and competition can be fierce. Collecting
football memorabilia is an excellent hobby, and a great way to explore the vast history of the
game.

Collecting can start quite
by accident – just a one off purchase of a shirt can lead to quite an addictive hobby. The good news is that,
in the long term, merchandise and memorabilia can hold it’s value quite well. Even when buying brand new
items, if you’re lucky enough to pick up an item which later is associated with a momentous event you really will
have struck gold. The football fan who picked up a John Barnes shirt would have had no idea what a great
investment they were making way back when. The same can be said of national strips – perhaps more so as these
matches are the focus of so much attention. Look at the shirt worn by Pele in the Brazil-Austria match in
1971. One of these would fetch a pretty packet today but who would have known it before the final
whistle?
You might want to keep your hoard of football
shirts under lock and key, or out on display for all to see. It is a good idea to keep older, rarer
football kits out of bright sunlight to avoid fading, and use mothballs to avoid any nasty surprises in the
future. There are hundreds of football forums out there which can be a great way of tracking down the
rarer football tops and chatting to other collectors.

You may want to collect shirts across the board;
those from a particular club or just those relating to a particular player. It’s good to have this in mind
when you begin collecting, but it’s not the end of the world of you don’t. There are, after all, tens of
thousands of other collectors out there to take unwanted items off your hands. A great place to sell on
your unwanted gear is online auction rooms. Alternatively, as mentioned, online forums are a great place
to talk to other collectors and here you may find someone willing to exchange your item for something you’re
keener to get your hands on.
Online auctions are the number one place to lay
your hands on those rarer, harder to source football shirts. They’re also great for finding this season’s
